How We Installed a V-Mesh Perimeter Fence Through a Woodland at a Yorkshire Hotel & Spa

A real-world look at how Airedale Fencing tackled roots, slopes, a live gas main—and delivered a result the client was over the moon with.

The Job: Perimeter Fencing at Thorp Arch Hotel & Spa, Leeds

Not every fencing job is straightforward. When Airedale Fencing was called in to install a new perimeter fence at a hotel and spa retreat in Leeds, we knew from the first site visit it was going to be an interesting one.

The brief? Run 2m V-mesh fencing all the way along the boundary—through an existing overgrown area, past a woodland section, around corners, and down a slope. The existing boundary was marked by old chicken mesh that had seen better days. The client wanted something secure, clean, and built to last.

Simple enough on paper. The ground had other ideas.

The Challenges We Faced

1. Roots and Woodland Ground Conditions

Once we got into the wooded section of the boundary, the dig got significantly tougher. Tree roots running through the ground slowed progress and required careful working to avoid damage. This is the reality of fencing in natural environments — you can’t always predict what’s underground until you’re in it.

Our experienced team adapted, worked through it, and kept the line straight throughout.

2. A Live Gas Main

Midway through the job, we identified a marker indicating a live gas main running beneath the ground. We immediately called Northern Gas out to site to mark the exact location of the pipe.

Once marked, we planned the panel layout so that a full 3m panel straddled directly over the pipe — meaning no digging anywhere near it. Safety first, always. The gas engineer was happy. We were happy. Job carried on.

3. Slopes and Level Changes

The boundary ran downhill throughout — something that doesn’t always come across on video but makes a real difference on site. Managing the fence line on a slope requires careful stringing, precise post placement, and experience to keep everything looking clean and professional.

We used half-cut panels in key areas to keep the gap underneath the fence consistent and tidy, even as the ground dropped away.

4. Old Concrete Pillars

Buried remnants of old signage — three large concrete pillars from a former motorway sign — were discovered along the route. These required working around carefully, with additional cuts made to ensure the fence line remained clean and uninterrupted.

The Solution: 2m V-Mesh Fencing, Properly Installed

V-mesh fencing is one of the most versatile and durable options available for commercial and hospitality perimeter security. It’s strong, low-maintenance, and looks clean in natural settings—which made it the perfect choice for a hotel and spa environment.

Here’s how we approached the installation:

  • Strung a line from the gate at one end to establish a clean, straight run
  • Adapted the layout around corners, slopes, and obstacles as we went
  • Used half-cut panels where the ground dropped to maintain a consistent, professional finish
  • Straddled the gas main with a full panel to ensure zero risk to the underground pipe
  • Worked through the woodland section methodically, managing roots without compromising the line or the finish

The result? A clean, secure perimeter fence running the full length of the boundary — through woodland, around corners, and down the slope—that the groundskeeper described as looking “wonderful.”

What the Client Said

The groundskeeper—who had actually recommended Airedale Fencing to the hotel manager based on previous work at a local school—came out during the job to check progress. By the end of the week, the hotel manager was equally pleased.

We were told we’d be the first call for any future fencing work at the site.

That’s the kind of feedback that means more to us than any award.

Why Experience Matters on Complex Fencing Jobs

This job is a good example of why experience matters in commercial fencing. A less experienced contractor might have:

  • Hit the gas main without proper checks
  • Struggled to maintain a straight line on the slope
  • Left inconsistent gaps under the fence in the woodland section
  • Taken significantly longer to adapt to the ground conditions

With over 35 years of in-house expertise, Airedale Fencing has seen it all. We don’t subcontract. We don’t cut corners. And we don’t leave a site until the job is done properly.
